There are roughly two ways to improve the world: one through your personal life, the other through your job. Personally, you can volunteer for good causes, be kind to people, put your energy into things like fundraising that help others, etc etc.

For your job, you can choose to work at a company that does projects that improve the world (say, work for an engineering company that makes wind turbines). Another department I sometimes work with inside my company does measurements on wind turbine farms in northern Scotland, which produce clean energy, so maybe one of the projects i work on in the future could contribute to that!

Using my powers of flight and super-strength, I plan to fight crime as soon as I get a costume put together.

      …oh wait…that was a dream…

      🙂

There are so many areas of science and engineering that benefit from being able to use the Diamond sychrotron that I can’t even begin to remember or list them all! Medicine, computing, even history and anthropology and loads more all get use out of the machine to work that they otherwise wouldn’t be able to do!
