The best part of my job is having to solve difficult problems. Often nobody will have faced the exact same problem before so I have to put my thinking cap on and work out a solution. Engineers are really good at working together, so I’ll speak to others and they’ll have different ideas from my own. It’s a great feeling when you find a really good solution!

There’s the problem solving – like doing puzzles for a living – that’s good…but if I am honest, I have to say I just love working somewhere that’s so sci-fi! I mean, my lab has a three foot thick iron door with flashing lights and klaxons – it doesn’t get much better.

I think it’s satisfaction of looking back after ac ouple weeks or hard work and knowing you’ve accomplished something cool. For example, I just spent two days designing an aluminium mount that goes between a camera and a lens – drew it in 3D drawing software, printed the drawing and labelled all the dimensions, and last week I gave it to the workshop to build. It’s a great feeling, like youv’e just passed a test and it’s in their hands now for a few weeks before they give it back and i have to test it!
